Evidence suggests that SIP construction saves between 10-20% in the overall build cycle

This is a cost driven industry and most clients want the most thermally efficient and fastest build for the least amount of money. However it seems that there’s either a logic bypass or off-site manufacturers are just not explaining their offering so that clients understand.

Our sector is growing exponentially at the moment whilst traditional building methods continue to decline for obvious reasons, it’s slow, requires more skilled labour, weather dependency, extra unforeseen costs etc. etc.

Most weeks someone tells me that we’re more expensive than other build methods, usual between

5-10% is the bottom line difference. However the evidence is clearly in our favour.

Overall building with SIP panel systems will deliver:

10-20% reduction in cost taking the whole build cycle into consideration, along with a host of benefits not apparent from the initial costing for your project.

Latest studies in the US suggest that SIP build uses 55% less labour than timber frame. SIP also has 85% less air leakage, uses 45% (minimum) less energy and uses 45% less CO2

An excellent article by Allan Corfield introducing the benefits of SIP construction states:

"One of the key benefits over traditional timber frame or modern closed timber frame systems is the spacing of the vertical timber studs within the walls. In a timber frame building these are at 600mm centres, while in a SIPs wall they are at 1,200mm centres. Therefore the amount of poorly performing timber in the wall is halved. This dramatically reduces repeated coldbridging in the building.

Factory-made SIPs panels will be more accurate than on-site cut timber frames, and this helps to limit gaps in construction. This, along with the inherent airtightness of oriented strand boards (OSB) and a rigid insulation core, helps to limit air leakage in the building, making SIPs a great fit for Passivhaus projects.”

The video below is a typical small project, the 60 sqm two storey extension was erected in two days, the outer finish will be brick slips attached to our SIP panels, clients moved into their new space in weeks, not months, the benefits are clear and the market will continue to move towards off site build solutions.

Even the UK Government agrees that the potential to achieve 10 to 20% reduction of cost on building sites and build homes more quickly through the use of homes constructed off site.
